By Tom Osborne
Amazing book by the prolific Nebraska coach and congressman, Tom Osborne. It chronicles his life after retiring as the head football coach of the University of Nebraska. After ending his stellar career of 25 years, including 25 straight bowl games, never less than 9 wins in a season, and 3 national championships, Osborne became a U.S. Congressman and eventually returned as the University’s Athletic Director.
Great stories sprinkled with superb leadership insights.
I think one of my favorite quotes from the book was:
“I can continue to serve the outcomes I desire or choose to serve the people I am called to lead.”

Dr. Tom Osborne has been a mentor of mine for many years. Both he and his family are models of integrity and service. What I most admire about Tom is his transparency about his faith and convictions. He has not bought into the “conventional leadership thought” that one’s spiritual and religious faith be behind the scenes. It is a significant part of who he is, and thus he feels no reason to hide it? I cherish the time I have been able to spend with this great man, and his wife Nancy. Tammy and I have been enriched by not only his teachings, but in observation of how he lives his convictions. No one has to tell you about the depth of Tom’s beliefs – they seep from every part of who he is.
